In order to lose weight, we need to eat less calories. Absolutely. There is no doubt about it, and no argument against it. Obesity cannot be blamed on our families, because the truth heredity does play a role, but only a small role in our weight.
You know who is truly responsible for our weight? We are! And it is not only in the amount of calories that we eat, but in where those calories come from that can decide how much weight we take off or put on.
In a recent article by Dr. Marc Hyman, he describes in detail the truth about how fat free foods can actually make us eat more. (http://drhyman.com/). But how is that possible?
In his article he says ?The Women’s Health Initiative, which is the largest clinical trial of diet and body weight, found that 50,000 women on low-fat diets had no significant weight loss. Yet another study looked at people who followed four different diets for 12 months — and found no dramatic differences between those who followed low-fat, low-carb and very- low-carb diets.?
Because fat has the most calories, we assume that if we remove it, and lessen the amount of total calories, that it will help us to lose weight. And yes, it does lessen the calories, which is important. But what they do instead with these fat-free foods in order to make them taste good and to bulk them up, is replace the fat with starch and carbohydrates. Otherwise, the food will taste horrible. Moreover, fat is the most potent appetite suppressant. No fat — what do you think will happen to your appetite? Up! Therefore low fat or fat free products actually make us eat more!
So our bodies enjoy these fat-free foods, which fill us up quickly and serve their purpose of giving us less calories. But for some reason, we continue to be hungry and our appetites are raging. Here is where old science comes back in.
We do not need these over-processed fat-free foods. If we ate a naturally balanced diet of natural foods and meats we would see that it can fill us up for longer periods of time, without causing these bursts of what seems like starvation, even though we just ate!
The truth is that fat is the most powerful appetite suppressant, so we need it in our diets, otherwise we will always be hungry. If you remove the fat your appetite will never be satiated. Also, when the carbs go up, the insulin goes up and creates a feeling of hunger, which makes us actually gain weight instead of losing it!
Mother nature knows what to do. Do you often eat fat free foods as a staple in your diet? What small changes can you make in your diet to make you eat more natural and healthy foods? How much processed food do you eat?
So, what are we supposed to do:
Eat organic: so that you get the most nutrients and best benefits from the foods that you eat.
Grow and cook your own food so that you can guarantee where it came from and the fat that is put into it.
Be a vegetarian?sometimes: try to keep some meals meat free
Don?t eat processed foods. Nothing that comes in a package can be guaranteed!
Avoid carbs, wheat and dairy, except natural fruits. Stay away from fruit juices.
Now that you are aware about the pitfalls related to including fat free foods in your diet, make sure you avoid this. Remember, fats are an important form of nutrients and one must inculcate these in their diet!
