Nobody wants to be killed by a crazy gunman. But the same disease the crazy gunman had might be inside of you and killing you silently.
December 14, 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut. 20 year old Adam Lanza came into the school building and started shooting. He brutally killed 20 children and 6 adults. Earlier, he killed his mother. As soon as responders arrived, he killed himself.
December 24, 2012, Webster, NY. William Spengler set fire his house and started shooting when firefighters arrived. Result: 2 firefighters killed. Then he killed himself.
December 27, 2012, Queens, NY. A middle-aged man was waiting for the #7 train. A woman, mumbling to herself while standing behind him, suddenly pushed him to the tracks in front of the fast-moving train. The man died, and the mumbling woman ran away. This is the second recent murder case in the New York Subway when a man is shoved in front of the train to death. On December 3, 2012 another man was pushed to the tracks in front of the fast moving train.
The list is endless.
Insanity: there?s more out there than you think
Of course it is horrible when innocent children are shot or a man is shoved to death in front of a speeding train. Of course it should be stopped. But how?
The fact that crazy people are killing kids and adults does not surprise me because according to the statistics about 20% of the adults in the US are mentally challenged. Some people believe that the percentage of mentally challenged is much, much higher in some areas: for example in Manhattan it might be up to 80%. Can you imagine?
Are gun bans the answer? I don?t think so.
What surprised me is the conclusion people made after the Sandy Hook massacre: ban the guns. Moreover, the Journal News published the names and the addresses of the people who legally have handguns with the title: The gun owner next door. Should we read it as: the gunman next door?
Obviously the map is in fact a guide for criminals: now they know what addresses to avoid because there is a gun there. I wonder what were they thinking about when they published this map? What was New York State thinking about when they allowed this information to be public?
Stopping insane acts of violence
But unfortunately, not enough people are asking a simple question: how did it happen that mentally ill people are walking around and killing innocent people? Of course guns prohibition is not going to work. This has been proven by the experience of countries like England and Australia, with gun laws that are much more stringent than the US. Example: after enacting Firearms Act in 1998 with almost complete ban on firearms, the gun crimes soared, not dropped. In June 2012 in Cumbria, England taxi drive Derrick Bird killed 11 and injured 12 before killing himself. Another example: in 1987 Michael Ryan in Hungerford England killed 16 and injured 14 before killing himself. What shocked me was that this gunman was wandering around for 8 hours before the rescue came because of the simple reason: not only the public but also police were unarmed. Think about it!
So looks like guns themselves are not a problem. If a crazy man decides to kill children, why bother with a gun? He can buy a couple of cans of gas and set a school afire! Even easier. Looks like not only the public but also the authorities do not think about it.
But even a crazy gunman did.
August 1, 1966, Austin Texas. 25 year old Charles Whitman killed his mother then his wife. Then he went to the observational deck of the Main Building Tower of the Texas University and started shooting. He killed 14 innocent people. Sounds like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting? Yes. Except one detail: ThisTexas gunman kills family and innocents and left a suicide note, where he asked to do his autopsy to figure out why he had an urge to kill people. And they did. It was a brain tumor.
Insight into insanity
Even a mentally challenged Texas gunman realized that there must be a very serious disease that made him crazy. And he did ask for help, but did not get it.
In psychiatry they call it ? insight?. Someone who has an insight understands his problem. And he can act to save himself. Without insight, the chances for cure are slim.
Insight is very important not only to avert the big mental problem like impulsive shooting, but also to deal with everyday situations like below optimal productivity, less than desired s.e.x.ual activity, inadequate sleep that may lead to cancer, etc.. A person, who has an insight, realizes that problem and acts. But what if he does not? Then he lets the disease progress until it is too late and there is no sleep, not s.e.x. life and no productivity.
Obviously the insight is a very delicate function. It might be lost in the beginning. Therefore it is extremely important to identify the problem and act before the insight is lost. But according to my experience the vast majority of the patients do not have an insight. Why?
The plausible explanation is: most of the people believe that mental problems are mental, not physical. But in my opinion this is not true: the vast majority of mental problems originate below the neck. This is why it is extremely important to act immediately and find the root cause of the problem before it is too late. To do that you need your brain power.
Taking care of your mental health
My thoughts how to preserve your brain power:
1. Have enough rest by getting rid of everything that is not necessary. Avoid stress.
2. Have enough sleep, go to bed with sun down and get up with sun rise. Remember that sleep is inefficient if it is in the wrong time of the day.
3. Make sure that you are getting enough vitamins and nutrients, especially B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids and minerals like iodine and selenium. Keep in mind that taking nutrients may not be enough because if your digestive system is not working properly taking them could be waste of money and time.
4. Stick with Paleolithic diet provided that it is safe and your digestive system is working properly. Otherwise you can do more harm than good.
5. Check and balance your hormones if necessary. Low thyroid, low adrenals and a s.e.x. hormone imbalance are notoriously known to make people mentally challenged.
6. Find a functional medicine doctor that can find and treat the root cause of your problem. Do not make any health decisions without approval of your physician.
Good luck!
