The recent Vytorin scandal has inspired other questions about cholesterol lowering drugs, mostly statins. The most important discussion topic is whether or not they prolong life? There is no answer to that as no one is sure. So do we really need statins? I think we may benefit from taking them.
The reason for the confusion in survival benefits might be because high LDL is not the only risk factor for heart disease.
The solution might be to check for other known risk factors as well, such as lipoprotein A, homocystein, and others and correct if needed.
